Plant biotechnology for the environment

Basic aims:  To provide a general picture on the biotechnological
strategies that can be usefully exploited for the reduction of
the environmental impact of the techniques of management
of the cultivations and for the development of useful plants
in the balancing and environmental monitoring.
Acquired skills:  Knowledge on the biochemical and physiological processes
of the plants exploitable for the management and the
improvement of the environment.
Course contents:  HERBICIDES: mode and mechanism of action; the
physiological and molecular basis of plant herbicide
resistance or tolerance; development of herbicide-tolerant
acquisition and assimilation; sensing of nutritional status
and regulation of nutrient uptake; biotechnological strategy
for improving the use efficiency of the main mineral
PHYTOREMEDIATION: molecular and physiological basis of
metal hyperaccumulation and tolerance in plants;
biotechnological approaches for improving the heavy metal
phytoextraction efficiency of non-hyperaccumulator plant
ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING: plant bioindicators.
Program:  HERBICIDES: Mechanisms of action of the modern herbicides. Selectivity. Molecular bases of the resistance and the tolerance to the herbicides. Search of sources of genetic variability for the constitution of resistant or tolerant plants. Strategies for the obtaining of resistant or tolerant plants. Some examples of tolerant or resistant transgenic plants. MINERAL NUTRITION: Acquisition, translocation and assimilation of the mineral nutrients. Techniques for the identifying and the study of genes involved in the mineral nutrition and in the nutrient transport. Selectivity. Regulation of the nutrient uptake. Improvement of the use efficiency of mineral nutrients. PHYTOREMEDIATION: Main phytoremediation tecniques: phytoextraction, rizofiltration, phytovolatilisation, phytodegradation. Factors conditioning the efficiency of the various techniques. Molecular bases of the hyperaccumulation and the tolerance. Improvement of the plants exploitable for phytoremediation. BIOSENSORS and BIOINDICATORS: Strategies for the development of biosensors and bioindicators for the environmental monitoring.
Prerequisites:  Previous knowledge: botany, physiology and biochemistry of the plants, molecular biology techniques.
Preparatory instructions:  Plant molecular physiology.
Learning materials:  Articles provided during the course.
Other info:  Modality of examination: presentation of a final work on pertaining themes.
Students will be evaluated for their capacity to expose and organize a final presentation about the state of the art of a relevant topic.
