Animal breeding and applied biotechnologies

Basic aims:  To acquire deep knowledge on animal breeding strategies in main domestic species by traditional tools of quantitative genetics and modern tools of biotechnology applied to animal productions.
Acquired skills:  Ability to interpret and process biological data issued by animal husbandry facilities. Skills to manage molecular biotechnological innovation in quanti-qualitative improvements of animal productions.
Course contents:  Selection schemes and programmes of genetic improvement of quanti-qualitative traits for the principal farm species. Effectiveness of genetic prediction. Rate of genetic change. International genetic evaluation. Biotechnology and animal breeding: gene and marker assisted selection;genomic selection, reproductive biotechnologies and transgenesis. Traceability of animal products and management of farm animal genetic diversity.
Program:  Introduction and history of genetic breeding in animals husbandry. Role and tools of classical genetic breeding to improve quanti-qualitative traits of animal production Genetics of quantitative traits. Statistics and their application to the analysis of phenotypic variability; estimates of genetic variability, heritability, genetic correlation and repeatability. Selection schemes and programmes in the principal farm species. Effectiveness of breeding schemes. Evaluation of genetic gain and affecting factors. Sire and dam index. Accuracy. Genetic trend. Selection index of the principal Italian cattle breeds. Selection indexes in other farm animal. Genetic index globalisation: international genetic evaluation (MACE), international organisation (Interbull, ICAR). Limits of selection and breeding. Biotechnology and animal breeding. Role and perspectives of molecular biotechnologies in animals. Basic tools of molecular genetics: PCR, restriction enzymes, sequencing. Farm animal genomes: sequencing projects, genomic annotation, bioinformatic tools. Comparative genomics applied to farm animal studies. Search for genes associated to production traits: the candidate gene approach. Gene assisted selection: examples of polymorphisms in candidate genes involved in quanti-qualitative productions of farm animals. Marker assisted selection. Microsatellites and paternity test. QTLs search and applications to animal products improvements. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and their utility in animal husbandry. Molecular markers and animal products traceability (animal, breed and species). Biodiversity: organisation levels of biodiversity and measures. Genetic diversity and measures. Management of intraspecific genetic diversity. Molecular knowledge applied to the history of domestication of principal farm animals. Biotechnology of reproduction and transgenic animals: artificial insemination, embryo transfer and MOET schemes, ovum pick up, semen and embryo sexing. Cloning techniques, perspectives of cloned animals in animal husbandry. Transgenic animals: traits of interest, applications and perspectives.
