Basic aims:  The course aims to clarify the role of livestock systems in the context of agricultural systems and to investigate aspects of the sustainability of livestock activities in terms of pollution, production, product quality and animal welfare. It will also provide the skills and tools for the evaluation of resources and critical factors of modern farming systems.
Acquired skills:  The student will acquire the knowledge to monitor and improve the modern livestock systems, thanks to the study of the parameters of sustainability and the most current research methods in the field.
Course contents:  The aim of the course is to deepen the relationship between animal husbandry and environmental protection and animal welfare. Main topics: - Farming and environment: law and regulation concerning animal breeding; the best available techniques. Food safety:nutritional and managing strategies to reduce the riks of contamination. - Animal Welfare: stress factors and methods for the evaluation; law and regulation concerning animal breeding ant transport. - Organic livestock: general principles, consistency and general situation in the world, in Europe and in Italy; regulations for livestock production under organic farming. - Mountain livestock systems: role of grazing; management systems for livestock grazing.

Technical visits to organic and conventional farms .
Prerequisites:  Students shoul have learned basic principles of animal nutrition and breeding techniques
