Basic aims:  To acquire a basic knowledge of the chemical, structural and functional characteristics of the main non-informational biological molecules, as well as of the different types of nucleic acids and of the flow of the genetic information. Knowledge of the characteristics of living organisms and their evolutionary history and heredity, the cell and its structures. Knowledge of cell types and their functions, tissues and organs of the organization, their relationships and their physiology, in relation to food characteristics.
Acquired skills:  Students acquire a fundamental knowledge of biology:
- ability to recognize the main non-informational biological molecules and to understand their functions;
- a basic knowledge of the flow of the genetic information;
- knowledge of structure and function of cellular organelles;
- knowledge of cell division;
- knowledge of some of the main physiological processes underlying the life of plant and animal organisms;
- ability to understand the main morphological and physiological characteristics of living organisms and of the cells that compose them.
Course contents:  Features of living organisms General principles of biology Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells autotrophy and heterotrophy organisms. Cell structure and organization. Differences between animal and plant cells: cell wall and chloroplasts. Cell division: mitosis and meiosis. Structure and organization of living organisms. Tissues. Growth and development. Reproduction. Life cycle. Basic principles of animal physiology: respiration, homeostasis, eating and movement
Program:  FEATURES OF LIVING ORGANISMS: origin and classification of living organisms. Living organisms’ general properties Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells autotrophy and heterotrophy organisms. Hierarchy and organization of life levels. CELL: as functional and structural unit. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell features: membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, mitochondria, and vacuoles, cytoskeleton. Differences between animal and plant cells: cell wall and chloroplasts. CELL DIVISION: mitosis and meiosis. STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION OF LIVING ORGANISMS: evolutionary lines of animals. Animal tissues: connective, muscular, nervous and epithelial, cell junctions. GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. Sexual and asexual reproduction. Life cycle. BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY: respiration, homeostasis, eating and movement
