Elements of hydraulics and irrigation
Code: G271M-
Teacher:  Bianca Ortuani
CFU subdivision: Lectures: 5
Practices in classroom: 1
Basic aims:  The course aims: (1) to provide the scientific basis of hydraulics, with particular attention to the properties of liquids, the statics of fluids and the laws governing the water movement in open channels and in pipelines, (2) to provide concepts and procedures concerning the quantification of plant irrigation requirements, the irrigation techniques and materials, and the irrigation scheduling, (3) to apply theoretical arguments to the verification and the hydraulic design of basic infrastructures and irrigation systems.
Acquired skills:  The student acquires the basic knowledge to address and solve hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and water flow problems in open channels and pipelines, as well as problems of irrigation planning and scheduling. Moreover the student acquires the ability to apply the theoretical concepts to the verification and the hydraulic design of basic infrastructures, as well as to the design and the management of irrigation systems.
Course contents:
Program:  The program, for the Hydraulics part, is concerned with the
fundamentals of hydraulics, namely of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics
for uniform water flow in pipes under pressure and open channels,
as well as the discharge measurements in open channels. The
theoretical knowledge is addressed to the applications in design and
verification of simple hydraulic infrastructure, products and systems

The program, for the Irrigation part, includes the fundamentals of
soil hydrology, soil water balance in crop land and irrigation
scheduling. The course provides knowledges for estimating the
irrigation requirements for crops, to plan irrigation on basin scale,
and efficiently manage irrigation on field scale. The different
irrigation methods and the modes of irrigation scheduling are
illustrated. The main components of the irrigation systems are
detailed and the basic knowledge for the hydraulic design of the
pressurized irrigation systems are provided.

The program includes exercises showing how to apply the
theoretical knowledge
Prerequisites:  Fundamentals of physics, knowledge of the systems of units, trigonometry, and elementary algebra
Preparatory instructions:  Info not available
Learning materials:  Citrini e Noseda, Idraulica. Editrice Ambrosiana, Milano

Capra e Scicolone, Progettazione e gestione degli impianti di irrigazione, Edagricole
Other info:  The examination consists of both written and oral exams. The written exam requires to carry out two exercises (one relative to the Hydraulics part and one relative to the Irrigation part). The oral exam discusses the results of the written exam.
