Basic aims:  Soil genesis, processes and dynamics of soil formation in relation with the landscape; interpretation of main soil characters connected with soil environmental functions and main international classification rules; world soil distribution, genesis of soil maps, and evaluation of soil capability.
Acquired skills:  Interpretation of soil chemical, phisical, descriptive and cartographic data in relation to vegetation, lithology and geomorphic dynamics in the rural or natural environment they are generated from.
Course contents:  Soil genesis, processes and dynamics of soil formation in relation with the landscape; interpretation of main soil characters connected with soil environmental functions and main international classification rules; world soil distribution, genesis of soil maps, and evaluation of soil capability
Program:  - Soils genesis and classification: Definition of soil; environmental functions and relationships; soil forming factors: climate, geomorphology and topography, geolithology, biology (vegetation, fauna and man), time; Soil description and recognition of genetic horizons; Soil temperature and umidity regimes; Pedogenetic processes in temperate climate; - Soil Classification: USDA Soil Taxonomy and FAO World Reference Base;With reference to WRB: description of geography and behaviour of main typologies with particular regard to Lombardy Region soils.
- Soil Survey: methods, time and costs; Field soil description: recognition of genetic and diagnostic horizons, sampling in relation to standard chemical and physical tests;
- Soil Cartography: taxonomic and map unites, uses of soil maps related to the cartographic scale, Examples from Lombardy Soil Regional Maps;
- Soil degradation: soil erosion; physical (compaction and crusting) - chemical (acidification, salinization, organic matter loss) constraints.
- Land Evaluation: Land Capability Classification; Land Suitability.
- Exercise
• classroom: example of WRB classification from real data; interpreting a soil map from legend to soil types and their characters and behaviour.
