Basic aims:  Unit 1: The course aims to provide basic knowledge of plant cytology useful for understanding the structural organization of higher plants and preparatory to the study of biochemical and physiological processes that determine productivity.
Unit 2: The course aims to provide basic knowledge of cytology, heredity and plant morphology useful for understanding the structural organization of higher plants and preparatory to the study of biochemical and physiological processes that determine productivity.
Acquired skills:  Unit.1: Knowledge of the composition, function and characteristics of biological molecules and plant cell structures.
Unit 2: Knowledge of the systems and tissue of plant organs. Understanding of biological processes of growth, differentiation, reproduction and heredity.
Course contents:  Sexual reproduction and meiosis. The inheritance of the genetic traits. Genotype and phenotype. The genetic code, DNA transcription and translation. Life cycles in Algae, Bryophytae, Pteridophytae and Gymnosperms. Angiosperms: life cycle, Monocot and Dicot structure and morphology. Meristems and differentiated tissue systems. Structure of root, stem, leaf, flower, seed and fruit. Laboratory practical activity.
Program:  Principles of genetics. Sexual reproduction and meiosis. The inheritance of the genetic traits: mendelian and post-mendelian models. DNA replication. From genotype to phenotype: the genetic code, DNA transcription and translation. Mutations. Short accounts on recombinant DNA techniques. Plant structure and morphology. Non vascular and vascular plants. Monobiontic and dibiontic life cycles: Algae, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Spermatophyta. Gymnosperms and Angiosperms (monocots and dicots). Types of cells and tissues: meristems and differentiated tissues. Primary structure: morphology and anatomy of roots and stems. Leaves. Secondary structure: vascular and cork cambia, secondary growth in roots and stems. Flower structure. Sexual and asexual reproduction. Embryo and seed development. Seed germination. Fruit structure.
Laboratory practical activity: preparation and observation with optical microscope of plant tissue and organ samples.

Other info:  One written examinations at the end of the course, with 24 multiple choice questions, 3 open questions that require short answers, 1 open question that requires a broad answer on a program topic, the identification and description of two images of tissues/organs. Monthly oral examinations are foreseen.
