General and inorganic chemistry
Code: G240F-
Teacher:  Stefania Mazzini
CFU subdivision: Lectures: 4,5
Practices in laboratory:  1,5
Basic aims:  The aim of the course is supply the students with the fundamental knowledge of chemical language. The relationship between structure and matter, its macroscopic properties and reactivity will be discussed.
Acquired skills:  Understanding of formulas of chemical compounds; knowledge of principal chemical-physical properties; knowledge of acid-basic and redox behavior; performance of simple stechiometric calculation; fundamental operations for the manipulation of inorganic compounds.
Course contents:  Will be described the structure of matter (from atomic structure to chemical bond; from intermolecular bonds to aggregation states) and its transformation across the chemical reactions. Particular attention will be dedicated at chemical equilibrium in solution and for the resolution of simple stechiometric calculation. General and inorganic laboratory: fundamental operations for preparation of solutions, quantitative analysis.
Program:  Main Theme n.1 : elements, compounds, mixture. States of matter: solid, liquid and gas. Phase transitions. The mol. The atomic structure. The electronic configuration and the periodic table of elements. Main Theme n.2: molecules and ions. The chemical bonds. Hybrid orbitals. Simple, multiple and delocalized bonds. Electronegativity. Bonds and polarity of molecules. Main Theme n.3: chemical equations and reactions. Mechanism's reactions: short account of kinetic and thermodynamic. The solutions. The concentration of solutions. Colloids. The stoichiometry. The chemical equilibrium. Acids, bases and salts: short account of nomenclature, definition and proprieties. Main Theme n.4 :amphoteric substance. Hydrolisis. Electrolites. Conductivity. Acids and bases definitions and proprieties, pH, indicators and buffer solutions. Main Theme n.5 : The redox reactions. Oxidation number. The balance of redox reactions. The electrochemical reactions, different types of piles. Main Theme n.6 : practical experiments about solubility, concentration, solution's preparation. pH measure and volumetric analysis, methods of separation and analysis.
Prerequisites:  Basic chemistry and mathematic at the high school level
Preparatory instructions:  none
Learning materials:  Slides of the course. Suggested books:

Petrucci et al., "Chimica generale" Ed. Piccin
KOTZ et al. "Chimica" online version.
Other info:  The exam consists in a test at the end of the course. All the arguments treated, included the practical experiments, will be object of the exam.
DSA students are asked to give timely notice to the teacher to agree on the exam procedures.

Students enrolled in an exam session who no longer intend to support it are required to unsubscribe.

On the basis of specific and proven requirements of Off Course students, additional test dates may be planned after appointment with the Teacher at the Faculty of Agriculture in Milan.

The slides of course are available on-line. Laboratory attendance is subordinated to the participation of a safety lesson.
