Agricultural pollution prevention and management

Basic aims:  To furnish information about: a) molecular and biochemical
herbicide action modes for improving management practices; b)
low input approaches for improving fertiliser use effciency in
palnts; c) the molecular and physiologic effect of organic or
inorganig pollutants in plants; d) biomonitoring and
phytoremediation of polluted enviroment.
Acquired skills:  Knowledge about: a) herbicide and plant growt regulators mode of
action for improving their use and managment; b) plant
determinants of fertilizer use efficiency; c) advantages and limits
of phytoremedition techniques
Course contents:  Seminars:
Environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology. Role of agriculture.
Water and soil pollution. Atmospheric emissions. Environmental
impact and life cycle assessment.
Water treatment and protection. Soil remediation.
Inorganic and organic pollutants. Biomagnification.
Herbicides and Plant growth regulators: Herbicide molecular
and
biochemical modes of action. Pesticides and heavy metals
residues in plants.
Bio- and Phyto-remediation of polluted soil and wastewater.

plant. Herbicide metabolism. Biochemical and molecular basis of
herbicide resistance. Herbicide cross-resistance.
- Plant growth modes of action Plant mineral nutrition:
Plant mineral nutrition: molecular and biochemical basis.
- Pesticides and heavy metals residues in plants.
- Environmental sensors. Bioassays for the herbicides detection in
water, soil and biomass. Plant bioindicators and biosensors
- Phytoremediation techniques. Phytoextraction, rhyzofiltration,
phytostabilization, phytovolatilization.
